Newcastle have returned to work, the strike at McAlpine's Eidon Square site remains solid. The return to work was the result of the disgraceful role played by Transport and General Workers Union officials in the region, who have given fall support to Me/pine's drought out the four month old dispute However McAlpine's the Labour Council and the trade union officials have failed in their efforts to call-road the striker into accepring a so called independent enquiry into the dispute. Though the inquiry, onanised by the Conciliation and Arbitration Service (CAS - the body set up to police the social contract) is still going ahead, the strikers have refused to accept its find Ings unless it calls for the reinstadement of the 14 scaffoldens sacked by McAlpBut the Eldon Square strikers am now isolated. Support from other workers up and down the country is more vital than ever. It isn't just a case of tea and sympathy? for a few lads who have been on strike for a long time. The Balon Square strike has revealed every feature of the situation emerging under the stinpresent Labour Government.
We have seen here an unholy alliance betueen the trade union officials and the employers, McAlpine's The local Labour Couneil then decided to get in on die act -on the side of Me Aline', of course. The police had their 'bit of tue', arresting ten pickets after harass ing the picket line every day. Scabs were hrought into break the strike -and ghen T&G cards to make their job casier. The press and media have consIstendy attacked the strikers The Tones may have jalled the Shrew sbury 2, but the Labour Goverment is equally determined to hold onto the jail keys. Now ten more pickets are under attack in Newcastle It is vital that al trade unionists take up the figitt inside their union hranches for a mass picket at the court on the day (not yet fixed) that the trial begins. A victory in New castle will not only help these lada but it will be a great step forwand in the campaign to fee the Stewsbury 2 and to defend-all pickets.
